For thousands of us here in the Cincinnati area, Monday will be a sad day as the CincyNation News web site, after eight years of being an on-line publication, will close up shop.
CincyNation is owned by USNationNet and this closing will not affect the other 238 sites which are owned by Richard Hines.
CincyNation had an edge to it and an attitude that I always liked and this blog owes Richard Hines a big thank you. He took a liking to our little old LOL Blog almost from the start and added us to the CincyNation blogroll and featured a lot of our posts on the web site. Thanks to Richard Hines, many more people have found out about what we do here and our readership has grown. I will always be grateful to him for this.
Mr. Hines, you are a class act. You’ll be missed here by many.

This is indeed sad news. CincyNation was my source for Cincinnati news and I used it as a replacement for the Enquirer. Now what?
Its “attitude” was pretty much to slam Cincinnati.

Rally, you’re full of bullshit. CincyNation always made a point of stating how we’re screwed up (and screwed up we are), but also pointed out some of the good things. It was balanced and that’s why I made it a habit. Your statement shows you never really read it.

I think “Hinessight” is also run by Richard Hines. It very much has that same flavor – sort of a bite, you know? At least we’ll still have that.
This is a shame. I think web sites who are liberal have a hard time here in conversative Cincy. We don’t like anything that’s a little different.

I was a religious reader of CincyNation. No one is more disappointed to see it reach the end of its run. I’ll miss the smartness of this site.
This is great to hear. Now Cincinnatians won’t have to endure Rick Hines snide remarks about this great city. He was just a bitter former resident that could never move past whatever issues he had with this place. We live in a great city, maybe it takes an outsider like myself to convince many of the locals. I run into many transplants to the region that are in the same boat as me and absolutely love this city.

You have had The Cincinnati Nation on your blogroll since you first started this up and I got in the habit of reading it because it covered Cincinnati news as well as national news.
It was hip and smart. Now, it’s going away.
I have to live here because of my job but that will change at some point along the line and I can’t wait until that happens. Cincinnati can’t embrace anything that is new and progressive like CincyNation, but other cities can. I need to move to one of those other cities.

Say it isn’t so! I met Rick Hines in 1972, when he was on the staff of the local McGovern for President campaign, helping fight an unjust war. His work on Cincinnati Nation has been groundbreaking. It’s our loss.
Let me guess, “Sinsinnati” – you’re in marketing and you live in the suburbs, way outside the city limits. Maybe you work downtown, but you get in your car in the ‘burbs, come down for 8 hours, and go back to your home bubble.
Having lived here for 39 years, I think there’s a lot of great things about Cincinnati too – the beautiful hills, parks and landscapes, Music Hall and the CSO, Bogart’s, the Zoo.
But there’s also a racist atmosphere that runs both ways {e.g. Karen @’s recent post}, an overzealous police force and a city council that hands out taxbreaks and parcels of land under threat of corporate threats of abandoning the city while one small business after another dies with no lifelines even being offered. There are reasons why downtown is a wasteland after 6pm and all weekend long and those things need to be pointed out.
But if you live in the safe bubble of suburbia these things don’t touch you and you don’t have to look at them. Some of us do and if we want to raise hell about them that is our right, hell, even our duty as citizens. I don’t know where the hell you get off on your “outsider” high-horse as needing to convince us of the good points of Cincinnati. But good luck with your marketing tool status and spreading your genes in the same family pool. You’ll fit right in with that part of our populace; not all of us are like you though.
Wow Brian, looks like you have a lot of anger inside of you. By outsider, I was refering to moving to Cincinnati 4 years ago. I have lived all over the country and think Cincinnati is a great city (not perfect) and find many transplants that feel the same way as I do. It is usually the native that has traveled little in their life that does nothing but complain about the city.
Maybe you need to go join Rick Hines in Atlanta if you are so unhappy here else why don’t you step up and help make it a better place instead of bitching for the sake of it.

This is horrible news! I lived in Cincinnati for 9 years, and am originally from Dayton. I live in Honolulu, Hi now and everday I love to check out what is happening back in Cincinnati. CincyNation was the website I visited most often. It is truly unfortunate that it will be shutting down. I want to know WHY it is shutting down. I have yet to see a reason behind the decision. I absolutely detest the Enquirer. I hate the fact that I will have to read that garbage of a newspaper to get my info. Today is a sad day!

Richard more or less said on this site this morning that Cincinnati is too small of a market to survive in. I agree with you. This is horrible news.
It appears that The Cincinnati Nation is already no more. When I clicked on the site, up comes Richard’s national blog. In the left hand corner – in read – it says “Where’s CincyNation?” You click on it, and up comes the post written here yesterday.
Perhaps that’s fitting, you know? Richard Hines had no fear in stating what he thought was wrong with this city and neither does the editor here. Both Hines and Gross encourage debate and if any city needs that it’s Cincinnati.

I am so sad that CincyNation is gone. Living outside of Cincinnati for the past 12 years this online magazine was my connection to home.
Yes, sometimes his remarks were ‘rough’ but I think in his own way he was trying to get the people in power to wake up. I live in the San Francisco bay area (yes it is a very liberal place to live) and realize there is life outside of Cincinnati.
I will eventually move back to Cincy because I have family members living there, but I dread it in some many ways. Yes, there are a lot of good things about the Cincinnati but the one thing I don’t know that I can live with is the conservative attitude.

What is up with the love fest for Cincy Nation? They didn’t report anything, they just linked to stories, except they usually twisted the headlines. Glad to see that site is no longer. Seems like some of the people on here liked it because they used it to justify their dislike for Cincinnati. Like the guy said above, if you don’t like it here, “SEE YOU LATER”. As for the poster above that linked to the other website, I don’t think he said the city is perfect. We know the city isn’t perfect. Cinplify looks user driven so it isn’t a matter of someone only posting negative news since it is a community driven site. I will have to play around with it. It reminds me of Digg but with a local flavor.
And to Mouse, I don’t know what publication you are reading but the Enquirer hardly covers up the bad. You have the right to complain about the Enquirer because it is a terrible paper but it isn’t a matter of covering up the bad as it is just a poor run newspaper that is slow to cover stories in the community.
The Enquirer looks for any chance they can to slam the city. I have to get my news from other sources about all the new developments that are being built around Cincinnati because you rarely ever read about them in the Enquirer.

If he wasn’t such a twit, maybe his viewers would have clicked on his links. Instead, his site was like a train wreck, you came to see what he was going to say next but you didn’t support his site by clicking on his links so he could get paid.

Here’s how I see it… I found links at CincyNation to stories that the Enquirer took 2-3 days to pirnt, if at all.
Cincinnati had an up-to-date, interesting, informative news site with CincyNation and the locals didn’t embrace it.
It did point out the problems in the city, as it should have. Not many other sites did it, with the exception of LOL and Beacon but that was only from time to time. It also noted the good things, moreso than the bad.
I found CincyNation well rounded, and will miss it.
CincyNation didn’t report anything, he only linked to stories from the Enquirer, Post, Business Courier, Cincinnati Blog, Cincinnati Beacon, etc… It is amusing to read the comments on here. It was a website, that was tacked up with ads that apparently his devoted following didn’t even click on. The viewpoint was one sided, he didn’t offer a comments or feedback section and the site included nation news linked to common websites like CNN.com that didn’t even pertain to Cincinnati.

There was a certain style to it all. It flowed right. And, as far as the negative stuff…. it wasn’t a Chamber of Commerce site. It presented the good and the bad about Cincinnati.
If you want to take issue with negative news, look what WCPO, WLWT, and WKRC do day in and day out…. crime in Cincinnati, murders, rapes, and robberies.

San Francisco is a great city, but Oakland is no San Francisco.
Cincinnati’s murder rate is skewed. The city is only 78 sq miles. Cincinnati is safer than Indianapolis and Columbus when you you take a sampling of those cities within 78 sq miles yet those cities always get the positive press. Those cities created a unigov system where the county and city merged so the city boundaries are now over 400 sq miles. Both cities had more murders than Cincinnati and their murder rates were higher within the 78 sq miles sampling of their inner cities. The Enquirer doesn’t report this news, they merely just want to make you feel like you live in a war zone.
You are all bitter sheep. Why don’t you research a thing or two about how these numbers are gathered before you draw your own conclusions. I suggest you compare the cities 80 something murders with other cities and you will see that the number isn’t as high as you would think for a region the size of Cincinnati.

Learn what? Learn how to offer tax abatements and TIF Financing, to cause our downtown residential population to explode? Learn how to rezone a warehouse area like the one behind Target in Oakley to residential so that we can have Millworks, a 1.3 million sq ft. entertainment, residential, retail, office, etc. area, or is it the giving of land so that the Gregory family will build the 2 condo towers on the riverfront for a boost in downtown residents, or maybe it could be reverse in city population? Maybe the city actually growing now is a sign that things are not looking too up?

Yes because after all the name, “mouse” is so telling about who you are and what you have done for the city. The bottom line is that you all apparently looked at CincyNation for some sort of justification that the Queen City was a bad place to live. CincyNation resonated with you so much because many of you are bitter souls just like Rick Hines. To try and justify his headlines has “Tough Love” is laughable.
There and many internet blogs, internet news sites and message boards that do a far better job at covering the regions news or linking to corporate sites. CincyNation will not be missed.

Hines reported on the good and Hines reported on the bad. That’s the way it needs to be in any town. He had a big following here for eight years and it was his own decision to stop and to pull out of this market. It’s our big loss.
